This report describes the characteristics of SNAP households and participants in fiscal year 2013. About 83 percent of SNAP households lived in poverty. Most SNAP households (75 percent) included a child, an elderly individual, or a disabled nonelderly individual, and these households received 82 percent of all benefits. The average SNAP household received a monthly benefit of $271; 31 percent of all participating households had earnings.
