About Diane

Diane Herz has multiple leadership roles at Mathematica: as a company vice president, a director on the human services leadership team, and chief diversity officer. In these roles, she is responsible for articulating vision, assessing evidence, and providing leadership to successfully execute plans.

Herz is an expert in employment-related data collection. Her experience includes directing the nation’s labor force survey program (the Current Population Survey) and developing the American Time Use Survey. At Mathematica, she oversees and ensures the quality of projects for the U.S. Department of Labor, the Corporation for National and Community Service, and other clients. Herz has published many articles in peer-reviewed journals, including the Monthly Labor Review, and has contributed to several books. Her research topics have included employment, time use, credentialing, survey development and management, employer-provided training, and pension and retirement trends.

As chief diversity officer, Herz led the design and implementation of Mathematica’s diversity and inclusion (D&I) program, which embeds D&I in all aspects of the company. This includes supporting the recruitment of diverse staff, leading a diversity council, sponsoring employee resource groups, providing unconscious bias training, developing a mentoring program, and advancing the organization’s cultural competence in research.

Herz has an M.S. in management information systems and a B.S. in economics. In addition, she is a graduate of the Federal Executive Institute and the Tuck Business School’s Leadership for Strategic Impact program. Herz served as president of the Washington Statistical Society (2015) and chaired the American Statistical Association’s LGBT Concerns Committee (2016).
