Alex Bohl specializes in supporting and deploying data science solutions involving machine learning, health services research, and data operations to a variety of federal, state, and nongovernment clients. He has particular expertise with bundled payments implementation and monitoring; hospital- and area-level quality indicators; administrative data terminologies and value sets; quality measure risk adjustment, smoothing, and compositing; federal pay-for-performance programs; and acquisition of Medicare and Medicaid claims and encounter data. As director of data innovation, Bohl is responsible for incubating data science solutions and strategic data acquisition to address our clients most complicated analytic challenges.

Bohl currently directs the implementation and monitoring of the Radiation Oncology model Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation (CMMI), and previously led implementation and monitoring for the Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement Model. He also directs the hospital-level quality indicators analysis and support contract for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), expanding upon prior contracts he directed with the AHRQ focused on recalibrating the patient safety indicators for use in Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) payment programs. Bohl led Mathematica's CMS Artificial Intelligence (AI) Health Outcomes Challenge team that was selected as a Stage 2 finalist and is competing for the grand prize. Alex also oversaw the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Social Determinants of Health Data Visualization Challenge team, which won the grand prize. At the federal level, he is engaged in AI strategy as a participant in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services roundtable titled "Sharing and Utilization Health Data for Artificial Intelligence Applications."

Before joining Mathematica in 2011, Bohl worked on projects related to quality and process improvement at hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, health systems, and nursing homes. He has a background in industrial and systems engineering, and he holds a Ph.D. in health services from the University of Washington, with a dissertation focused on the economic impact of clinical and community-based to prevent fall-related injuries in Medicare populations.
