Sheena McConnell and Grace Roemer are participating in "She Served: Policy Research Roundtable on Women Veterans," sponsored by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
Policy issues related to female veterans have moved up on the national agenda as the number of women serving in the military has grown in recent years. In 2015, women made up 9.4 percent of the total veteran population in the United States. By 2043, they are projected to make up 16.3 percent of all living veterans. The conference agenda covers demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of women veterans, how they have used Department of Veterans Affairs services and benefits, and policy and research related to their future service and status as veterans. The goal is to communicate an understanding of who our women veterans are, how their military service affects their post-military lives, and how they can be better served in the future.
McConnell uses experimental methods to learn about the effectiveness of policies and programs to promote employment and strong families in vulnerable populations, while Roemer studies innovative approaches to outreach and workforce service delivery for veterans seeking civilian employment.
