Webinar: Strengthening Principal Preparation Through On-the-Job Training

Apr 24, 2019 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.
Online

A key challenge for policymakers is creating a pipeline of principals who are prepared to serve as instructional leaders. Districts often use the assistant principal position as a training ground for new principals. Yet little is known about how to design and implement on-the-job training opportunities that prepare assistant principals to serve as principals.

Join a webinar on Wednesday, April 24, at noon EDT to hear lessons learned from a focused effort by KIPP—a charter management organization—to develop assistant principals into principals through job-embedded training. To accommodate its rapid growth in recent years, the KIPP charter network has developed strategies for preparing assistant principals as instructional leaders. In this webinar, leaders from KIPP will discuss the following:

  • On-the-job training activities to develop the instructional leadership skills of assistant principals
  • Strategies that principals can use to model instructional leadership and provide feedback to assistant principals
  • Supports that principals need when they are responsible for developing the leadership skills of assistant principals

Webinar participants will be able to ask presenters questions about preparing principals through on-the-job training opportunities.

This event is part of a project to share lessons learned from the U.S. Department of Education's Supporting Effective Educator Development grants. Mathematica is leading the project for the U.S. Department of Education in partnership with AEM and Knowledge Design Partners.
